Axim Spesification Market Size

Axim Market Size WiFi

Introduction
WiFi has recently been quite popular. The hotspot market is bigger and more and more people with a wireless home network. It is therefore a logical step for Dell in their wireless PDAs to build.
Especially for business users is the built-in WiFi PDA attractive. So they can at the office during business trips and can e-mail monitor.Although PDAs are always meant for business people, breaks the PDA through the private market.

Ease of Use
Dell Axim X30 for its own program, even the "Dell WLAN Utility". This program can all be managed in terms of wireless LAN.
First, this program connect to available wireless networks. This is done by first "Site Monitor" to start, where after a few seconds a list of available networks is displayed.

This list may provide information about the access points are given, as the name of the network and the type of access point. By clicking on a network, more information is given as an access point's MAC address and signal strength.

After searching for available networks, automatically find all the networks profile added to the list of wireless network profiles. It is not possible to directly connect to a network in the Site Monitor.

After returning to the Home screen, click "Edit Wireless Profiles" click. Here is a list of all existing profiles and the profiles currently available. The stylus profile a few seconds to keep a small menu will appear. Doing this can connect to a wireless network.

Once connected to the network (status is then connected), information about the link provided on the home screen of the Dell WLAN utility. After connecting to a network, network settings such as view and change settings. In addition, detailed link information to be viewed.

Range
The range of the Axim X30 was the first thing I noticed while using WiFi. I walked through the house with the Axim and the connection was maintained, one floor below and in the garden I had a stable connection.

As an access point for all tests used Buffalo (review on http://www.wirelessnederland.nl/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=218 ). At this access point is no external antenna, which can affect the measurements.

The Dell Axim X30 comes with an external antenna (top right). With this antenna the range is considerably larger than PDAs that have no external antenna. The range of the X30 is roughly comparable to that of a PCMCIA card (D-Link DWL-650 +).

Home or office is not too great, the wireless network to good use X30. If something in a good central location and an access point is, it is usually the whole building, if not too big, good range.
With little signal is true that the Dell WLAN utility automatically switches to a lower speed in order to maintain a stable connection yet. In this way the range has increased albeit at the expense of speed.

The X30 is for testing not only the range tested at home. I went out into the open to test how it was with the range. It did well, I could just enjoy the street with the internet of people with unsecured access points. The X30 was on the street to connect to access point at someone in the home without any problems.

As for range testing, the Dell Axim X30 compared to a D-Link DWL-650 + into a laptop. On the laptop and the X30 is a version of NetStumbler / MiniStumbler (0.4) installed. At a central point in the house is a Buffalo access point and put down at various places in the home (12.5 x 5 meters and 8 meters high), the signal is measured.

1. Floor 2 from front to back
2. Floor 1 from front to back
3. Ground floor from back to front
4. Travel through the house from bottom to top

The access point is on the first floor, in front of the house.
Speed
The network speed of a PDA is difficult to measure. Therefore we have the network speed with a PHP script like for example speedtest.nl. This script is installed on a local server directly to the access point is connected. Using a normal computer via network cable is connected to the server, a speed of over 1000 kByte / s achieved. So there is enough speed for the maximum network speed of the X30 to test.
The test has a size of 512 Kbytes.

Test 1145 kByte / s
Test 2155 kByte / s
Test 3125 kByte / s
Test 4131 kByte / s
Test 5168 kByte / s
Test 699 kByte / s
Test 7126 kByte / s
Test 8128 kByte / s
Test 9126 kByte / s
Test 10131 kByte / s
Average133.4 kByte / s

Downloading files is also doable. For the test a 10mb.bin (just 10 MB, 10,240 MB) downloaded and the time is recorded with a stopwatch.
This 10mb.bin was downloaded in 102 seconds, this equates to a rate of 100.4 kbyte / s.

The speed of the Axim X30 is roughly equivalent to the speed of ADSL Lite. The speed is high enough for normal internet, it is certainly no barrier to use.

Security
The Dell Axim X30 features a wide range of security capabilities for WiFi. The available authentication options are 'open', 'shared', 'EPS' and 'WPA-PSK, WEP encryption is also available.

The first thing tested was the WEP encryption code 0F8F83A2300AC6C89EA3B45CE4. The first thing I noticed when connecting to the WEP key was the easy acceptance. After entering the key and reconnect, there was a time you connect. Sometimes a lot of time needed to a WEP key to make it run, but the X30 worked at one time.

Fortunately, the access point that is used in these tests, so many possibilities and could also be tested WPA-PSK security. The TKIP key is the following: Zr5QRelYZRrDN1qsYJGcta2f3oWrSjaYWIe0f2lYXbab8ZkUzwqYYKhPuevtcwf.
Again, this worked perfectly once, after the X30 was a logging and IP network.

Setting the security is very clear, all security options are grouped and are easily adjustable. It is also noticeable that there is not first of all must be tried to improve security to make it run, it works even all at once.
